A Preview of Hell—the Horrible Choice

What is hell like? Most importantly, God is not there. Second Thessalonians 1:9 says hell is absence from the presence of God. The Bible also describes punishment and torment (Rev.14:10–11) in varying degrees (Matt. 11:21–24) based on the knowledge that people had and their response to it.

Some of you have been through the pain of the loss of a child, others the pain of a divorce or clinical depression. If you have been through these kinds of losses, you know what it is like to feel that depth of darkness and loneliness. The darkness (Matt. 8:12), weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth (Matt. 13:40–42) are all included in hell. It is forever (Heb. 6:2; Rev. 14:11).

People often joke about going to hell. You may hear people joke that their life is already hell, so they might as well go there. Hell is not a joke, and it is not trivial. Hell is the absence of light, love, meaning, purpose, and God’s presence.
